What do we have here?
He gone!
Just read that he was fired with a $54 Mil buyout . WTF???!! Are ya kidding me ?!!
Remember….it’s supposed the kids finally getting some compensation and being able to transfer that is the problem with college ball nowadays. Not the out-of-control salaries and constant recycling of coaches with unhinged buy-out clauses.
They fired the OC as well.
Some of these schools are crazy IMHO.
Kelly won 10, 10 and 9 games respectively in 2023, 2023 and 2024 and all three bowl games.
Hardly a disaster.
So maybe 5-3 isn’t a great start but almost no coach wins 10+ games/season every year.
To pay $50M+ to fire a coach who is as good or better than his replacement is just plain stupid IMHO. The AD and the Board could simply insist Kelly make certain changes to improve the program (and then fund those changes.)
I’m not a fan of these insane, long term contracts with huge firing buyouts that coaches never honor anyway. If they want to leave to take another job, they just go. The AD’s that agree to these retarded deals should be fired along with the coaches.
Agreed 100%. A little accountability for everyone.
Governor was involved too, even crazier.
Yeah, agree. Not a fan of paying the kids OR allowing them to transfer so often. I’m happy to see ONE portal but kids should have to sit one year if they transfer out to another school. It would certainly help to stop the constant changing. Welcome to what the almighty dollar has done for sports.
Now the freaking GOVERNOR of Louisiana is stating that LSU’s AD will not be the one choosing the next HC. Talk about a backassward state ! That’s the biggest concern in that state right now ??? He does’nt have more pressing matters on his plate ?!
May the old gods help us all ! ![]()
Confirmed! This will be the moment that I hand in my resignation.
Given that it’s a state university and the AD has put the state on the hook for $54M there is an argument for state intervention. If a state employee in some other area of government bet $54M and lost the governor would probably notice that too. At some level state universities are the responsibility of state government. If LSU was private then the governor has to go pound sand. What state programs for ordinary citizens could be funded with $54M? (Not saying the governor is thinking altruistically.)
And that’s why you are called rationalcane. I didn’t look at it from that perspective. I was thinking about all the income that the football program brings in, that it really wasn’t on the taxpayers, but technically it is.
They would not have had to fire me. As I stated earlier, I would have handed in my resignation the moment that story broke.
Well, it just happened again. Matt Rhule at Nebraska. And when he flames out in 2028? Well…
“Nebraska coach Matt Rhule has signed a two-year contract extension, the school announced on Thursday.
It extends Rhule’s contract through the 2032 season.
The extension does not change Rhule’s base salary, the school said, but includes new salary escalators for College Football Playoff appearances.
Rhule currently makes $8.5 million per year, according to USA Today’s database.
But the existing deal already included escalators — in 2027, that number will rise to $11 million, and in 2030 it will rise to $12.5 million, according to ESPN.
The new extension will be at that $12.5 million figure.
Most importantly, the extension raises Rhule’s buyout this year from $5 million to $15 million, ESPN reported, effectively taking him out of the mix for another job this cycle.”
Rhule had a seven-year, $62 million deal with the Carolina Panthers ($8.8 million annually). So basically no difference between the NFL and Nebraska (allowing for any bonus incentive possibilities).
