Not to get too picky… but the term used in the article headline should be “tapped”, not “tabbed”.
Presumably, “OED” refers to the Oxford English Dictionary.
“Also, OED defines it (tabbed) as “Identify as being of a specified type or suitable for a specified position”, as opposed to actually selecting whatever is tabbed.”
Thus, I wouldn’t say “tabbed” is clearly wrong in this case
How about “hired”,“appointed” or “named” instead?
Rather than “tabbed”, I prefer “precursor to Diet Coked”.
