A cautionary tale

A little reminder to keep things in perspective…

PS sorry for the buzzkill

I believe every long-time fan on this site is exercising cautious optimism. Some are jaded, some are knocking wood , and others may yet refuse to believe.

After Coker’s stupidity, Shannon’s cluelessness , Golden’s hard-headedness(?) , Mark Richt’s valiant effort, and Manny coming up short …we are “Curbing Our Enthusiasm” (can I say that ?)

This must be for the rest of you, I suppose. Can’t be for me. All I ever have to do is think about every season for the last 21 years to keep me grounded. I’m still looking at all the ways we can still yank 7-5 out of this season. It starts with that game at South Florida then we’ll see what this team is really all about.

After the Georgia Tech game last year, whenever the team ran on the field, I would hear this in my head.

I’m somewhat optimistic given the improvement in the roster before injuries take their inevitable toll.
However, all of us are understandably jaded after years of abuse and I won’t be surprised if the team sleep walks through and badly underperforms in the upcoming cupcake games. Hopefully, they don’t manage to lose any of the next three games. If the team shows up to play, all three games should be blowouts but I’m not really expecting that to happen.

I guess I just can’t help it. No matter how many times they burn me.

Stork, I don’t see it happening though I understand your feelings since we’ve gotten used to crapping out against lessor opponents. Somehow, through Mario’s recruiting prowess, we landed a QB who is the real deal. Bad plays don’t seem to affect him. If we still had Van Dyke, my thoughts would match yours. Ward has years of throwing TDs already in his repetoire. Additionally, I think Dawson has improved; he called one helluva game this past week.

On the defensive side, we have players who are maximally disruptive. Baron and Alston wreaked havoc with Graham Mertz, a high-percentage passer, who played his worst game ever, and eventually was knocked him the hell out of the game. Take away the one long rushing play and Florida had virtually no offense. We’ve got a defensive coordinator who turned Marshall into one of the most formidable defenses in the country. Mario wanted a physical team, and that is exactly what I saw playing against Florida.

Years ago, ignominiously, FAMU beat the Hurricanes. They’re arguably the best team in their league, but there will be no ignomy this Saturday. Chill out, Stork.

Probably the least penalties I’ve EVER seen a Miami team commit. Maybe these guys get it. Maybe we’ll get a ride worth being in for, for once.

Thoughts on the FAMU game? I haven’t looked yet but think it’s on the ACCN in my area. If they get out ahead maybe some burn for the second teamers? (I know some will read this and say UM can’t take for granted crushing FAMU.)

The way this team played last week, the first game of the season, I KNOW they’re going to take care of the games that are supposed to be automatic. I’m calling that now. This team is not only talented but disciplined. There is always the caveat about injuries, no one can control that, but this team will take care of business when it is expected.

The question I’m not so optimistic about is what happens when we face real adversity? A team with a pulse? These questions will need to be answered one day.

But the next couple of weeks? Have fun Canes fans…

And the winning FG in that FAM game (1979?) was kicked by one Vince Coleman who went on to have a great MLB career with the Cardinals and the Mets; he was one helluva base stealer.
