I have 7 of our top 20 from the current portal as of the moment and all 8 new portal being the top 2 categories…

And 4 of our portal departures being top 20 and 6 in my top 2 categories (1st category is “impact” players, who start at 90% of schools in America or be top 3 in the rotation at all but maybe a couple schools…2nd category is average starters for a top 35-40 team or at the least a quality 2 deep player). Sophomores or especially frosh in the 2nd group or higher are something to be excited about. 3rd group is depth/glorigied jags.

Counting the seniors we lost/early attrition together… I have us losing 8 of the top 12 players on the team.

As far as top notch/ “elite or close to it”, guys that could start on almost every team in America. I have
as with just the top 2 at this time, Bain/Mauigao…At season’s end, I had us a definite 6, and possibly even 9 of those players. So we definitely need some guys to emerge.

Player development is KEY!
We seem to do well on the O but not the D.

I am curious to see who our new DC will be. A name that has been floated is Pat Fitgerald.

We need a DC “head coach” who can transform this group, develop them, and fill holes as needed. Not convinced that our D staff is elite at this point.

We need to tackle. We’d have twice the number of tackles for loss if we just concentrated on wrapping up the tackle rather than just trying to trip ball carriers. Wrapping up tackling is fundamental football.

Another disconcerting thing is looping the wrong way. Time and again, our defensive linemen would loop themselves out of the motion of the play, leaving an open field to ball carriers. I greatly favor last second shifting of defensive players. It ruins blocking assignments of the others team’s offense. Shifting and blitzing with an extra player often gives a defender an unblocked pathway to the QB.

We have seen very poor tackling in previous seasons. Maybe I didn’t notice, but I thought our tackling was decent this year.

If I had to pick the worst part of our defense, I wouldn’t say tackling, I would say being out of position. Either huge breakdowns in coverage or giving receivers too much padding, we would allow too many easy catches. Once that happened we were pretty average at tackling.

Everything being said here is the absolute truth. On Monday evening I watched N Dakota St vs Montana St and it was fantastic. In terms of intensity, tackling and coaching both of those teams put Miami’s on-field product to shame.

I dunno but you gotta ask…is Miami overpaying for coaches who don’t have a steady track record ? Why are the coaches at FCS level able to coach up whatever talent they can get and on Mario’s sidelines everyone looks lost?!

With flame retardant gear on… I have long considered that a lot of SoFla players “read their own press clippings” too often. They treat college as just a way station to their inevitable pro career. Or at least this seems to be the type of player who ends up on the UM roster.

Is it possible that other schools more selectively pluck the hard working, heads on straight ranked players from Florida and UM has their choice of the rest? Or Miami just doesn’t factor enough for personality traits over raw skills? (Cristobal seems to “say” he wants a certain type of player mentality.)

Of course, this does not touch on why players from other geographies are not “coached up” at UM.

When one watches a game like North Dakota State vs. Montana State one might be watching players who see playing college football as an end in itself. Their pride and craft. That is, until the P5 comes calling for the best players, hehe.

Culture, I think in So. Florida is about hype and not technique whereas the kids in Montana and Dakota are less hype and more dedicated to the craft of playing technically sound football.

I’ve long said that WE lack on the field leaders. Who was our leader on the field this year on D? No one. On O it was Cam.

We lack leaders and we lack coaches who know how to develop talent, IMO

So, today Barry Jackson with the usual half baked assessment of the team by position. Here’s the thing that gets me and seems to be becoming VERY commonplace these days. Both with sports writers and fans.

Assessing wide receivers. Emphasis mine.

For starters he goes, “Daniels and JoJo Trader are the front-runners for two slots. The No. 3 — who figures to play in the slot — could be a portal addition, with Ray Ray Joseph also in the mix here.”

For backups he goes, “Joseph, Chance Robinson, Ny Carr, freshmen Malachi Toney, Daylyn Upshaw and Joshua Moore. Several of those can compete for a starting-type role in the slot when UM opens with three receivers.”

Then he makes a comment, “At least two portal receivers likely need to be added, including a proven slot receiver. But there’s high upside with the seven young players, particularly Trader.”

I mean, what the fuck does UM recruit players for if everyone thinks the solution is portal, portal, portal? Can UM not identify and/or recruit high school talent? Why not kick all these ho-hum wide receivers off the team and just replace them with portal guys? Shit, stop recruiting out of high school full stop. Every year just reload the whole roster via the portal. (Actually this might be a natural outcome for some teams.)

Man, it gets tired real fast to just cast aside players who haven’t even seen the field because there’s some “hotter chick” in the portal. Look, some takes are rolling the dice. No doubt. But how can we crow about having a top ten recruiting ranking and then act like these players can’t even be water boys?

And Jackson basically makes similar comments about many positions. And other writers do too. And most fans do too. Whatever happened to rooting for younger players to get out there and show their stuff?

I would agree about portal, portal, portal. I think that we have needed to do this the past two years to “catch up” to other teams, but I think at some point, as long as we don’t have a mass exodus, we have to be elite in recruiting, which I think we are and then be elite in portal additions to shore up any weaknesses.

THIS is why DEVELOPMENT, DEVELOPMENT, DEVELOPMENT is key! I think we need a QB Coach on the staff each year.

Just read the article…

QB: IF Beck heals and returns to his 2023 self…great! In any case, he is the best option. Nickel seems to be the future. This is Emory’s last shot to impress. Judd is just depth to me.

RB: Back to Mark Fletcher, how do we feel about this? Do we really need one or two more portal guys?

WR/TE: I think we have some really good and young talent at the WR and at TE.

OL: Set

DL: We seem to have a ton of depth at DE. Interior DL is where we need one or two more girth bodies IMO

LB: Eh, this isn’t linebacker U anymore. Seems to be hybrid guys these days.

DB/S: We SHOULD be a ton better back there.

Of course ALL of this depends on how the spring shakes out and who gets beat and chooses to leave, meaning more portal guys.

Updated for recent portal losses, and will add in for who we add.

Patterson was #28…Karnley 34. All 3 of the others were in the unknown category.

Also, made some minor player adjustments up and down based on spring…I like for game performance to matter more of course, but will cave in a little bit for Greentree reports.

Some of of the “unknowns” being mentioned a lot that I’m not quite ready to bump up just yet are Maruise Lightfoot , Gerard Pringle, Josh Moore, Brock Schott, and Amari Wallace… Malachi Toney and Hayden Lowe are the only frosh at this time I’ve added to the ranked list.

I wouldn’t say that…Pringle is what? 17, 18 yrs. old? And broke off couple nice runs including 40 yd TD in spring game

Lightfoot needed weight, but the last 2 weeks of this spring were supposedly big for him and of the group of 3 edge guys we brought in 2 classes ago, reports are he has vaulted Pickett for top spot, and this contributed to Rudolph leaving as those two were ahead of him. Lightfoot is clearly one of the top 6 ends on this team at the moment and seems and at least 1 of Blount and Mesidor will likely lineup inside occasionally on passing downs. I was very close to putting him up in the top 40 part. Just wanna see it myself.

Lowe may end up being a different animal, as he’s in the 250 range already.

Embarrassment of riches at DE right now, JT has shown he can recruit em, now can develop them?
