Completely agree. The term thug used to be synonymous with mafia types. And then at some point it was hijacked… or maybe “expanded” to include other types of criminals?

Born in 75 and grew up in the drug days in south Florida. I actually don’t remember Thug U being used until the 90s or 2000s.
I guess it is all about context. Thug U - is stereotyping Miami kids as bad kids. Since thug came from India, it could be considered racists but I’m the one to make that call.
The moniker hearkens back to the Jimmy Johnson era. He actually promoted it.

Miami became a target of the mainstream sports media after the 1985 58-7 beat down of Notre Dame which was Gerry Faust’s last game as HC. The announcers were Pat Hayden and Ara Parsegian and they were practically crying at the end of the game. Miami got labeled as “poor sports” for running up the score on sainted Notre Dame. Meanwhile, Nebraska and some others were routinely beating their weaker opponents 87-0 and not a peep.
I don’t think it was racist so much as the MSM simply hated Johnson. Miami’s football team wasn’t any more thuggish that most other football teams. They are all rather thuggish IMHO.
Maybe it is just me but I dislike the layout of the new board.
It is not as intuitive as the old board.

Difficult to use, a definite layout downgrade. Probably won’t be posting much until it gets fixed.
Maybe try to emulate the old board to the extent possible for the sake of convenience?
Also, the lack of the 2015 schedule on the home page is greatly concerning.

i think the racial undertones with the term ‘catholics vs convicts’ is far greater than ‘Thug U’.
to my recollection, the word ‘Thug’ has only recently become associated with a racist vibe. before that, ‘thug’ meant ‘thug’, and nothing more.

There is less racism in America than in any nation I’ve ever visited, and I have done substantial traveling over the years I refuse to subscribe to the notion that it is malicious dog whistle for black people peculiar to white people. Inordinate crime is a salient problem within minority urban communities throughout the nation. It has become a popular phrase across all racial lines to describe bad actors whose behavior is abhorrent to civilized English speakers irrespective of skin hue
