It was actually a Republican proposal. The Dems were willing to compromise here.

I wonder why the Republicans drafted a weak immigration bill. I guess we would need to ask them.
Whether or not it’s an election year, I think passing laws and giving the president more power would have been a good thing. Better to have that for 8-9 months than not. If Trump becomes president, he could have still done whatever he wanted afterward.
This is clearly just Republicans wanting a talking point in an election year. Otherwise why would Republicans backtrack on the bill?
I don’t know the answer to why the few Republicans co-sponsored thr bill. That is a mystery for sure.
But it didn’t have support from many.
And what is the problem? The problem is it’s a ton of money to spend on something that isn’t going to fix the issue. I don’t want the US to throw away more money than we are already throwing away as it is.
