You will find some churches that do this the right way, and then there’s the Joel Osteen’s of the world.
My grandfather was a preacher his entire life, drove a school bus. They had 12 kids, backwoods OK, didn’t have a dime their entire lives. BUT, doesn’t appear to be many of them left. I live in Dallas, so all I see is megachurches everywhere. Where near my grandfather had his church, there is now the Oral Roberts University creating new prosperity con artists by the day
I don’t know enough about this to quantify, but your point stands. IMHO, this prosperity preaching teaches/focuses on everything, but the cross!
I wish I didn’t, but with Tulsa and Dallas on my history, I live in the heart of it. Oral Roberts was one of the earliest prosperity preachers, and from hence, came nearly all of the others from Tilton to Paula White. Roberts, himself, was one of the most transparent con artists, but was in the right place for that con. I recall at one point in the 80s he demanded $1 million by Friday or God would take his soul…when it didn’t work, he said God extended the date and to keep it coming. Different time, but I think they were happy. The older I get the more I think a quiet place in the country, enough to live on and eat, is much more the way to go than the rat race thing where we’re always fighting for a little more $ for more toys that we don’t use.
