Russia is used to economic crises, this being it fifth crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union. No longer is there a feeling of panic in Russia facing this crisis since Russia has the raw materials to make the painful conversion of operating its own industries following the bail out of Western corporations. Russia still has a formidable income stream from its sale of oil and gas to finance war in Ukraine while suppressing inflation.
Russia’s outlook on the war has shifted from active engagement of large numbers of troops to a war of attrition. This strategy has historical roots in the valiant success of Russia during the Napoleonic War. Under the great leadership of Field Marshall Mikhail Kutusov who commanded the Russian Armies following the Battle of Smolensk, Kutusov met Napoleon at Borodino. While Napoleon won the battle, his victory was a Pyrrhic victory. Kutusov withdrew his armies away from Moscow and Napoleon found a city largely emptied and half burned by the Russians. Then, the winter exacted its fury on Napoleon forcing him to withdraw along the same path that he entered. As the French withdrew along the destroyed pathway, they could not pillage the land they had already destroyed, and the Russians resorted to guerilla warfare plaguing the retreating French as they evacuated. The French entered Russia with over 600,000 men of which only 100,000 survived the campaign. It was the Russians that depleted the French Army which ultimately met their demise at Waterloo. Interestingly, the French lost more troops at Borodino than in any other conflict including Waterloo during the Napoleonic War. If you’ve read War and Peace, you’ll find a long description of the war. Tolstoy was a great admirer of Mikhail Kutusov.
We’re witnessing the same thing at Kherson. The Russians killed tens of thousands taking Kherson, but they found themselves in an untenable situation on the western banks of Dnieper River. So, despite negative optics, the Russians have evacuated Kherson, moving their army to the other side of the river to avoid being trapped with their backs to the river and in threat of flood caused by destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Dam or even worse the huge dam at Zaporozhye. On retreating the Russians have destroyed a section of the NK dam and have destroyed all railroad lines connecting to Kherson. The Ukrainians have moved into Kherson which is without electricity or railroad and as such their army presently cannot remain long as supply lines to the city are cut off completely.
Russia is in the process of destroying all electrical generation in Ukraine as well as railroads and vital bridges so what is left of the Ukrainian army is constrained from receiving supplies. Additionally, lines of communication and internet have been interrupted. As the weather becomes colder, the real Russian Army will enter Ukraine surround Kiev, Kharkov, and Dnipropetrovsk. It’s armies will face down the Ukrainians in the Donbass and move southward and westward along the Black Sea and into Transnitria. Ukrainians will be forced out of Kherson, which is now part of Russia, or decimated. Odessa and Nikolaev Oblasts will be incorporated into Russia. The Russian have no interest in Western Ukraine, and Poland may well move into Lvov. Russia is in no hurry to take its final steps in defeating Ukraine and may well allow Europe and Ukraine for a while to stew in their own juices.
