This is easily disproven in the realm of MMA. MMA rules and the practice thereof are more effective at mitigating “misery” and “suffering.” As I stated before, MMA is far more safe than both football and boxing. We have ample evidence.
You have a myriad of former NFL and college football players with CTE, literal holes in their brains. How frequently do we see men playing through concussions? Shit, just last week Tua couldn’t stand up after a concussion and was back out playing 3 days later…only to get another one. Those are just the visible and reported ones. We have more stories than you can count of players flying into the scrum, and not remembering what happened until minutes later when they were on the sidelines. They continue playing most of the time. Throughout the history of the NFL and college football, even hs football, how many stories of players getting their knees shot up or scoped before a game, then during the middle of the game, then again at the end? We’ve proven, and you yourself have proven, to not have a care in the world about the bodies of those players. You’re not calling for a revision of the game, a safer rule set, or calling on the fans to stop cheering for a 'wildly inhumane" sport. Football collisions have famously been compared to car crashes. There are no weight classes.
In boxing, I believe an average of 11 deaths per year, to this day. When they get concussed, they get a standing 8 count and continue on…taking blow to blow to the head for many many more rounds. Again, we have evidence of the effects on the body and brain of boxers. I don’t recall your comments on boxing at all, nothing.
Yet, in MMA, any sign of a concussion or the person being even dazed results in a TKO. The fight is stopped. After the fight, the UFC forces them to go the hospital. The judging commission suspends their fight license, as a rule, until they are medically approved. But, if you get a concussion, you’re out. In football, you play through it…it gets worse, you get more. Also, you get choices in MMA vs football or boxing. You and I can go into a cage, and if you’re not the size of a cow, I can take you down and bend you or choke you out without ever taking a serious punch. You can’t use your hips on the ground to swing at me so I don’t get hit with much impact. In football, a 350lb lineman who runs a 4.9 40 can run 40 yards at full sprint and lay into a guy who’s 180.
I’ve been wrong about most things in life at least once. But, I think we need to fight. I’m not sure why, but nothing works for me more than a fight. Now, I haven’t been in a fight outside of the mats or ring in 25 years. I think if you can’t handle yourself and be mature enough to avoid and walk away, you’re terribly weak. There’s got to be some hypocrisy in there…though my mind will rationalize that out. There is quite a bit of difference between brawling outside with anger and malice and a friendly competition of sport in the cage or on the mats.
