Did Russia just blink?
It’s hard to tell with their public statements, because different politicians say different things. So one day Putin says no conscripts are in the army, then the next day another politician says there are conscripts serving in Ukraine.
Anyway, the latest is Russia’s announcement just hours ago:
They said the main goals of the first stage of the operation have “generally been” accomplished and that they can now focus on “the main goal” of the liberation of Donbas.
This comes after 2+ weeks of a battlefield stalemate, which doesn’t mean an end of the fighting, just that the two sides are fighting without apparent progress.
2 more generals have reportedly died today. One of them was a brigade commander apparently run over by his own men due to battalion losses incurred. We still need confirmation of these.
What we DO know is that the Ukraine Army has started fighting back, advancing on and recapturing some limited territory the Russians had taken around Kyiv. And in the coastal city of Berdaynsk, supposedly under Russian control, Ukraine just sunk a moored warship!!!
It’s too early to say, but Russia may be blinking.
The conventional wisdom is that, if Russia wants to make advances again, they can only do so with chemical weapons (or a nuke, which won’t happen). The problem is NATO is talking hard against the chemical angle, cleverly setting up “chemical first responders” along the border. It’s a clear message to Putin: use chemical weapons and NATO may intervene.
This isn’t Syria or Chechnya. This war is too public to get away with that. I really think Putin is out of options.

Russia is not losing a war to Ukraine which no longer has an army. Russia is not about to run out of ammunition. Putin is very popular still in Russia. The Russian Army has already conquered more of Ukraine in a month than the Germans did with their blitzkrieg warfare with no regard to the safety of civilians. Speculation that Ukraine could win the war is an absurdity. Russia has an absolute no fly zone set up over Ukraine.
Out of consideration for civilians, Russia has not entered major Ukrainian cities save for Mariupol. Were Russia not holding back it forces, Kiev and Kharkov could be turned into parking lots, not by nukes, but by conventional forces. The West has no defense against the Russian hypersonic missiles. When the Kinzhal missile was launched against the NATO base at Yavoriv, there were no air raid warnings. The NATO personnel had no idea that a missile was on its way to lay waste to the NATO base. Over two hundred were killed in the Yavoriv attack including British and American NATO personnel. Several hundred more were injured. Where’s the news about this huge strategic victory?
The reason that Russians are leveling the city of Mariupol is two fold. The city became a refuge of large numbers of Nazis fleeing the Red Army and Marupol stands at the entrance of Russia’s most important waterway–the Volga-Don. Other cities have been put under siege, without electrical service, phone service, gasoline, food, or water. Russia will wait for their surrender.
The West is committing a craven error against humanity by sending weapons rather than having Ukraine surrender. The propaganda war also prolongs the war by creating the erroneous belief that Ukraine can defeat Russia. It cannot. Urging its citizens to fight is urging them under false pretenses to commit suicide.
After Kiev surrenders and the Russians pound Galicia stopping inflow of weapons, some of you will be amazed in realizing how gullible you were to believe Western propaganda. Were Trump president, the war would never have happened. Biden has damaged America and Europe as well.

I never claimed they were. But it does appear that Russia is losing a war to Ukraine which DOES have an army. It would be a pretty embarrassing stalemate if there was no enemy army!
This is false. Russia has entered Kherson, the only major city they have taken control of. (Except in the last few hours Ukraine launched a counter-offensive and claims to have removed Russia from total control.)
Also, Russia is continually shelling civilians, so them not entering cities isn’t for the safety of the occupants, it’s for the safety of the Russian Army. You wanna see a lot more Russian soldiers die? Have them walk into a city and see what happens.
News of Russia’s hypersonic missiles has been around. This Russian victory isn’t a secret. There was another case of a Ukrainian soldier sharing an image on facebook and Russia hit it with a missile and killed 300 soldiers.
(By the way, those soldiers are of the Ukrainian Army you keep saying doesn’t exist. Ukraine has the 3rd largest standing army in Europe. They in fact outnumber currently deployed Russian forces, especially after all of Russia’s losses.)
I agree with this and will add 2 things. Russian control of Mariupol would represent a complete land bridge to Crimea, although their control of the coast is questionable after losing a docked warship. Also, 2, the reason Russia is being the most vicious with Mariupol, to the point of not allowing evacuations, is because Mariupol is the headquarters of the Azov battalion.
Putin has greatly weakened Russia in both reputation, military power, and economy. Any legacy he may have had for giving Russia a few good years while he killed and robbed his own people is forever ruined.
